Conditional Design Workbook offers a design method formulated by the graphic designers Luna Maurer, Jonathan Puckey, Roel Wouters and the artist Edo Paulus, in which conditions and rules of play are drawn up that invite cooperation within a ‘regulated’ process towards and unpredictable design or result. Conditional Design plays with chance, frame-works and generative systems. The method is surprisingly simple, and allows every team to set their own rules.
The book functions as a workbook; the designer Julia Born has organized the material step-by-step, and shows in Conditional Design just how this exciting process works.
In addition, the authors offer a reflective framework for this do-book: Andrew Blauvelt (designer, writer and head of Architecture and Design at the Walker Center, Minneapolis) elaborates on the meaning of open (collaborative) processes for art and design; and Koert van Mensvoort (artist, writer, researcher and inventor) considers the applications of this method by telling modern parable of how Conditional Design forms the basis for the design and organization of the city of Zhiango in 2050.
