Farming the City explores the use of food as a tool for today's urbanization, by showing effective and achievable small-scale local solutions. The book investigates the impact of local food initiatives and urban agriculture on our built environment, economic systems, and community cohesion. It includes an introductory chapter in which architect and author Carolyn Steel updates themes she discussed in The Hungry City, as well as other short, forceful essays, and an overview of 35 inspiring projects. While some contributions sum up the economic and social advantages of such projects, other contributions analyse small and large scale spatial planning and look into possible political and policy implementations. New and sustainable technologies are also considered. Farming the City is a practice-based, realistic book, about what we can do to pave the way towards a locally-driven, equitable, post-carbon society.
